Such sad news with the announcement of the death last Monday
of Mal Peet, writer. His agent Peter Cox said His best and most exciting years
were still ahead: his premature death is utterly tragic.
He had the gift, once you were engaged in a conversation, of
absolutely shutting out the rest of the world and concentrating entirely on what
he was saying to you. I met him at a particularly happy lunch party at the home
of John and Ruth McIntyre here in Wellington a couple of years ago and it is a
memory to treasure.
